I have been writing a day behind on this trip. So what I wrote yesterday was actually from 2 days ago. It's driving me crazy, so I am going to bring you up-to-date with this post. That means I'll cover two days. If that's too much for you, tough shite.
We headed out of Kenmare early on Sunday because we were planning to drive and hike along the Ring of Kerry, a scenic roadway stretching over 110 miles. We had been on part of the Ring the day before when we drove into Killarney National Park (north east from Kenmare). This time we headed west along the coast.
The views along the narrow, yet somehow increasingly comfortable, road were wonderful. The drive took us into and out of farmlands and grasslands which opened up to the bay. Our first stop was for a hike in Derrynane National Historic park. The hike started by running parallel to the beach, tucked behind a long dune. The grasses surrounding the trail were tall, and reminded us very much of walking a British Open course. So different than anything we've experienced.
The trail then turned left and we hiked along the beach, the cool breezes from the bay blowing across us. I thought about how certain candles are made to smell. Ones with names like Fresh Air or Cool Breezes or something similarly pithy. None of them could capture the smell along that walk. It was ever so slightly salty yet fresh and clean. Like the way commercials say your laundry would smell after using a new detergent. Nothing could match this, though.
